I really enjoyed Prometheus because I feel it has a lot of connections to stories that have been told before, but that are fascinating anyway. A lot of the visuals actually reminded me of 2001: A Space Odyssey, my favorite film of all time and most of the story centers around that need to find out where we came from, where we’re going, where our Creator is.

Midnight In Paris
Of all the films that were nominated for a Best Picture Oscar this year, I seriously thought that Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris was probably the weakest of them all. Well, Woody has proven me wrong once again. It still surprises me how relevant he still is and how he seems to still be reaching his apogee during this current era. Whereas New York was once his muse, Western Europe seems to have taken over his creativity and he’s managed to make some great films recently. In Midnight In Paris he has crafted such an imaginary film, such a powerful dream, one that so many people can relate to. This film takes you away to a place you long to be, a place that maybe exists in your mind somewhere, and if not, one that will probably take shape after you see this film. I’m a huge francophile so it was a bit easy to weave myself into this story but the story does manage to take you to a special place, a place we’re sometimes afraid to reach for. From dreams come our greatest fears, our greatest desires and our greatest challenges so don’t be afraid to make a dream come true every once in a while. Conquering a fear, fulfilling a desire, overcoming a challenge is what life consists of. Midnight In Paris was a great film and I’m definitely looking forward to “To Rome With Love”.
Academy Awards
Academy Awards nominations finally came out and now it’s time to try and see all the Best Picture nominees before the winners are announced. Well, from the looks of things, this is going to be quite the task because for the first time in forever, I actually haven’t seen any of the nominated films yet. Something odd also stuck out, there are only 9 nominees where I believe the maximum amount of nominees can be 10. Does that mean they couldn’t find 1 more film to be nominated among the hundreds that come out every year?? How about a nomination for something like Bridesmaids or The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo or In A Better Life or even Harry Potter? Oh well, I guess they know best :-/
Here are the nominated films, my predictions will come out later:
The Artist
The Descendants
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
The Help
Hugo
Midnight In Paris
Moneyball
The Tree of Life
War Horse
Gone With The Wind

Went to a screening of Gone With The Wind saturday night at The Egyptian theater in Hollywood. I actually had never seen Gone With The Wind in its entirety until earlier this year but I’m very glad I did because it allows me the chance to completely seize the opportunity to see it on the big screen when possible. That opportunity became a reality saturday and I can’t emphasize enough how glorious it is to see a classic such as this on a big screen, in its crisp detail and cinematic grandeur. Everyone knows the Gone With The Wind story. Great story with superb, classic acting. Since it was only my second time seeing it, it definitely allowed for a deeper understanding and a new appreciation for one of the greatest films of all time. I also began reading Rhett Butler’s People earlier this year but never got to finish it. A bit of a sequel that was only introduced a couple of years ago, its status as fully authorized by the Margaret Mitchell estate should make it a very worthwhile reading and an enjoyment now that I have a much more deeper appreciation for all things Gone With The Wind.

In my run up to the Academy Awards I tried to see as many nominated films as possible in order to be able to have a fully non-biased approach to my prognostication, but alas, I couldn’t get to all of them. One of the films that I was pulling for, even though I hadn’t seen it yet was Biutiful. Starring Javier Bardem, Biutiful is both Mexican and Spanish produced and was submitted as the official Foreign Language entry from Mexico. In hindsight, it’s hard to argue against the Oscar winners from this past weekend but it’s also very clear that great performances and great films very often go unnoticed and unrewarded. Ok, so I haven’t seen the winner for Foreign Language Film yet but in my opinion it’s going to be hard to top the intensity, the hope, the reality portrayed on the screen and in the story of Biutiful. Bardem is a tragic protagonist with all he hopes for and lives for being dashed from right in front of his face, but with equal determination for redemption, for love and for a legacy that will last beyond what he’s done. How does one deal with life, with love, with mistakes, knowing that the end is near? See this film and find out. Bardem turned in an Oscar worthy performance and that’s why he was nominated. In a perfect world, he would have won the Oscar for his portrayal and Biutiful would have won for Best Foreign Film.
